1866-Mo Mexico City Maximiliano Peso

Repunched date variety Maximilino peso.

I purchased this coin in October 2021 before knowing of the existence of the 1866-Go Guanajuato Peso. I used to own several 1866-Mo MS63 pesos back then, so I consigned this one in November 2021; it was auctioned in January 2022. Finally, I repurchased this coin in February 2023 on eBay.

I have seen less than 20 examples of the repunched date 1866-Mo Peso. Most of them are in XF or AU condition. This example is the best I have seen so far.

How did this happen?

Due to the late die state (multiple die cracks visible) and the repunched last digit, the existence of this variety suggests an effort on the part of the Mint not to waste leftover working dies. Rather than throw out a working die, it was more economical to repunch the last digit in the date and continue using it.

Overdates are closely related to repunched dates. Repunched dates involve the repunching of the same digit or digits. However, a repunched date doesn't include one digit's superimposition over a different one.

A die crack occurs when a die, after being subjected to enormous pressure during the minting process, cracks, causing a small gap in the die. If this damaged die continues to produce coins, the metal will fill into the crack, thus revealing a raised line of metal in the finished coin.
