Balance Scale Series (1869 - 1873)

The Rara Avis Collection features the single-finest graded Oaxaca Peso, an 1872-Oa "Small A" peso, and a stunning mint state 1871-Ga Guadalajara Peso.

The "Balance Scale" peso was the second attempt to establish a Mexican peso. In 1869, the Oaxaca and Mexico City mints produced the first "Balance Scale" pesos.

Unlike his predecessor, the 8 Reales, the "Balance Scale" peso was not broadly accepted in Asia, impacting its export.

On May 29, 1873, Mexico stopped minting the "Balance Scale" peso and started producing 8 Reales again until 1897.
